Context
To celebrate Salter’s 260th anniversary, I was asked to design a heritage‑inspired wallpaper that blended the brand’s identity with a timeless decorative aesthetic. The piece needed to feel classic and celebratory while carrying subtle, discoverable brand cues.
The Challenge
The wallpaper needed to work at multiple scales and remain visually rich without becoming overly branded. The challenge was to integrate elements from Salter’s long history in a way that felt natural within a traditional repeat pattern rather than overtly promotional.
Approach
I drew inspiration from William Morris–style motifs, focusing on organic forms, symmetry and repeat structure. The aim was to create a floral pattern that felt authentically heritage at first glance, with brand references woven subtly into the design to reward closer inspection.
The Result
Developed a floral repeat pattern inspired by William Morris, built around symmetry and organic forms
Integrated subtle brand cues into the illustration: the Salter Knot within the structure, a scale dial in the daisy centre, and an ‘S’ motif woven into the leaves
Balanced decorative richness with clear repeat logic to ensure the pattern worked at both large and small scales
Layered hand‑drawn elements to create depth, texture and a sense of heritage craft
Refined colourways to feel period‑appropriate while still aligning with modern brand tones
Outcome
The concept was well received internally, with strong feedback on both the craft and the subtlety of the brand integration. Although COVID‑related event cancellations affected the original rollout, the design was successfully repurposed for social campaigns, ensuring the work still reached a public audience.
